Torre Gironella 2017

The Gironella tower is the oldest fortification in Girona, Catalonia, Spain.

It isthe tallest point on what's left of the city's Roman wall. It's known to have been around since 994, even though some remains that have been found indicate it could have been part of the first Iberian settlement. Nowadays, the Torre Gironella features a mix of eras: Roman bases, medieval canvases, and later reinforcements and extensions. According to legend it was founded by Gerió, a giant from Greek mythology.

Girona's Jewish community took refuge here in early August 1391, emerging 17 weeks later to find their houses in ruins.

Even though Spain's official expulsion decree did not go into effect until 1492, this attack effectively ended the Girona Jewish community.

Destroyed in 1404, reconstructed in 1411, and destroyed anew by retreating Napoleonic troops in 1814, the Torre de Gironella was the site of the celebration of the first Hanukkah ceremony in Girona in 607 years, held on December 20, 1998, with Jerusalem's chief Sephardic rabbi Rishon Letzion presiding.

Silvi photographed the GironellaTower in 2017 because of an interest in its Jewish history.

The resulting prints are made using the Photogravure process. A combination of photography and traditional etching. The subtle colour in the prints has been applied to the etching paper prior toprinting the plates.
